Blues (Broomhill) - Sonya Smith -

Rating:

Wow the place looks good, clean and nice. Food was excellent. Our group had mutton with rice and peas, chicken wings, and the patties were fantastic. Loved the rum punch. Great music. We will be going again. Thanks, had a great time.

Browns (City Centre) - J Jackson -

Rating:

The staff were lovely. Very friendly and helpful. However, the food is... well I can only describe it as overpriced s***e. I have never encountered such bad value for money. Will never go back.

Sword Dancer (Handsworth) - Adrian Taylor -

Rating:

Food spot on, staff very nice and helpful. Midweek birthday meal for my wife. Starter combo and horseshoe of onion rings followed by lasagne. Piping hot, well presented, fair price.

Asked for cream with lemon meringue rather than ice cream and asked for a candle in fudge cake, which they did.

Do not be put off, the Sword dancer is excellent compared to other Hungry Horse pubs like The Red Lion at Todwick, which I/we do not rate at all.

Shepley Spitfire (Totley) - Jan Merton -

Rating:

It's so nice to see the Shepley Spitfire lively again. Kirsty, the new manager, has really brought new life to the place after it became, shall I say, less than pleasant to drink & eat there. Her partner, Jamie, manages the kitchen well, and the meals are excellent now, with a vastly reduced waiting time.

Yes, as with most places where new managers take over, they had a few teething problems with inefficient staff when they first took over, but it really is worth a visit now. They even have live bands on & discos.

Great for the kids, too, with special events like "Breakfast with Santa" and fundraising fun days.

This couple really know how to run a successful pub and have a great staff team now. I would certainly recommend it and will continue to enjoy my meals there.

Today's wait for a Sunday lunch was just 30 minutes, which, considering the people in there, was not bad at all. Well worth the wait because it was scrumptious. Thank you Team Shepley.

Waggon & Horses (Millhouses) - Sheena -

Rating:

We could not disagree more with the previous comment! As this is just opposite from where my parents live, in sheltered housing, we have been a couple of times before it changed management, for convenience. It was awful! Dreadful food, limited menu, unpleasant and rude staff (big sighs if we asked anything, for example).

We refused to go again, but we had heard such good reports since it came under new management that we "tried it" a couple of weeks ago. We were lucky to get a table because it was so busy, even though it was not a weekend. We overheard lots of people saying how nice it was. Our food was really lovely, incredibly tasty and the staff were very friendly and helpful. My parents have been since for lunch and I've just booked again for an evening meal.

The previous comment sounds like what it was like before.

Meadow Farm (Ecclesfield) - Lisa Swann -

Rating:

12 out of 16 people enjoyed or were OK with their meal, the other 4 were very disappointed. Also the food was over-cooked and came with the wrong sauces. The deserts were lovely, but we won't be going back, as there's usually more of us and some people were finishing before others had got their food.

Swan (Ridgeway) - Shaun Woods -

Rating:

Been to the Swan today, which was Mothers Day. Had a great time but then a member of staff asked if we were having desert. We said no, then were asked to leave our table and sit outside. Very rude and embarrassing. If you have booked a table you should be able to stay at your leisure.

Walked back into the pub and people were already eating at our table, so they had obviously ordered food at the bar.

Very disappointing. Should learn to treat customers better.

Balti King (Broomhill) - William Huntley -

Rating:

Whenever we're in Sheffield, my wife and I always make a point of visiting Broomhill's Balti King. The food is always of the highest quality, the staff are always cheerful and friendly, and the service is excellent. So much so that poppadoms, pickles and salad are brought to your table as soon as you sit down. From that point on, you know you are in a very special place where the customer's enjoyment is given top priority.

Let's face it. Many Indian restaurants are much of a muchness, with the same pleasant but unremarkable food, similar decor and music, and the same courteous but stiffly formal waiters. The Balti King, however, is different, uniquely so in my experience. From the minute you step inside, you're struck by an atmosphere of genuine warmth, and no sooner do you take your seats than the poppadoms, pickles and bowls of salad appear on your table.

As for wife and I tend to go for chicken tandoori - its flavour is unsurpassed. I can recommend the chicken tikka as an accompaniment, we always order roti and onion bhaji. Quite honestly, we've never tasted better anywhere else.

As you look around at the end of the meal you notice how much companionable conversation there is around you, and how the friendly waiters move around the tables, talking as they go. Listen to the music, and it hits you that the music is not traditional sitar (nothing wrong with that of course) but modern Indian pop music - a refreshing difference, as is the decor, which is decidedly not of the flock wallpaper variety.

What more can I say? Highly recommended.

Crown & Cushion (Chapeltown) - Hayley -

Rating:

Not even one star... We literally called in for a quick drink tonight on our way home from having a meal elsewhere when we spotted a group of friends. So after purchasing drinks we went to sit with them, when we got approached by a member of staff who was very rude. She basically asked why we had sat down, that she believed we were in the way, as there was a couple sat opposite eating, and said because we were a large group, the couple must have found us intimidating whilst they were eating. (They insisted to us that we weren't & that they had finished.)

We weren't loud or over powering, we were simply just chatting. To say I was shocked is an understatement, it was totally uncalled for and after speaking to the manager he was just as rude. He said we were sat in an "eating" area, might I add our friends hadn't eaten and been sat there for two hours and it was 10 o'clock at night, and there were people sat everywhere!

The tables that were around were dirty, my glass wasn't clean and the toilets are disgusting. I certainly wouldn't eat there. Honestly go to the Acorn pub up the road - less pricey, much better staff and excellent food.

Avoid this place... really, really disappointing. They should be ashamed!

Beijing City (Greenhill) - Colin -

Rating:

This used to be our favourite Chinese restaurant, with excellent food, and service to match, so although we had not been for 6 months we had no hesitation in going there for a family birthday. What a disappointment! A lot of trivial problems, which added up to their losing our business for the future.

To summarise...

- no prawn crackers offered, although all other tables had them

- a long delay after finishing the appetisers to get the table cleared. In the end I had to call someone over to do the clearing

- all plates were cold, so as soon as you had the food on your plate from the serving dishes, then it started to go cold. In fact on another table I saw a gentleman ask for his food to be microwaved, it had gone that cold

- despite the fact we had asked for chopsticks there were no bowls, just plates. Not easy to eat rice off flat plates. When I raised this I was told that people don't like bowls!

Not recommended other than as a takeaway.

Waggon & Horses (Millhouses) - Dave Clements -

Rating:

I am a long standing customer and have frequently eaten in the Waggon and Horses. It has always offered a good selection of food at very competitive prices. How it has changed! We recently had an evening meal there and were quite shocked at the "service" we received. The staff were more concerned in going home than offering table service, as we were routinely "blanked" when trying to attract attention.

The menu is very limited to say the least. Our order included two pizzas and they were hard, dry, not very well topped, and very expensive - I'd go as far as to say drastically over-priced for what was on offer.

Don't bother providing feedback as you will be ignored, but that will be the last time they ignore me as I will not be returning.

Take my advice and give this place a wide berth.

Ayesha's (Dronfield) - Sue -

Rating:

The worst attitude from a waiter I've ever encountered in my life. Will never go again. This place does not deserve any customers with people like that working there.

La Perle (Wicker) - Laura -

Rating:

Very pleasant and polite owners and always make you feel comfortable and relaxed. I'm always in there with my girls or to have quick mocha enjoy their hospitality, as I know them quite well now and they always make myself and children feel welcome. Cakes are divine and delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes to dine with excellent quality and people who own it, they're lovely people.

Old Horns Inn (Bradfield) - Robert Frost -

Rating:

Visited Friday evening with family and friends. Our first visit and most certainly not the last.

The setting is delightful, food and service superb with a great selection of local brews.

Highly recommend a visit.

Gigi's Cucina (Nether Green) - Adil -

Rating:

Awful food, avoid! Expensive.

I did not like the food here. The taste was bland and I did not think it tasted very authentic. Had better supermarket ready meals.

Also, very expensive for what you get.

Carluccio's (Meadowhall Shopping Centre) - Jane Gration -

Rating:

Having read the previous reviews I have to agree with the comments made.

We often visit Carluccio's in West Bridgford and in Dorchester, both of which are excellent. Having had good experiences at both these restaurants we decided to lunch at Carluccio's in Meadowhall during a shopping trip.

The food was well below par, the service not existent, and at best surly, and I agree that the whole restaurant had a grubby appearance.

Plenty of alternative eateries at Meadowhall, so will not be visiting this Carluccio's again.

Butlers Balti House (City Centre) - Brett Sinclair -

Rating:

Only put 1 star, as no facility for 0 stars.

Bad experience from start to finish.

Overpriced for portion size.

Just putting 2 chillies on top of a bland curry sauce does not make it a vindaloo, no matter what spin the waiter feeds you.

Sorry but I'm not impressed. It's about flavour and infusion of spices, not just heat.
